Wire a 4-Way Trailer Plug by Function, Not Guesswork

For conventional 4 pin connector wiring on a trailer, white is ground, brown is running lights, yellow is left turn/brake, and green is right turn/brake. This mapping applies to a conventional 4-way trailer-lighting harness—not every connector with four terminals. Identify the connector, verify each circuit by function, and only then make the connections.

The 4-way trailer wire colors and functions

Use this function-first mapping for a conventional 4-way trailer connector:

This is the commonly documented 4-way trailer wire color code. Treat it as a starting point, not proof that an unknown or previously repaired harness follows the same colors.

A conventional 4-way has no separate brake-light conductor. Yellow operates both the left turn signal and left brake lamp; green performs both functions on the right. With the brakes applied and no turn signal active, both side circuits illuminate. The vehicle-side wiring or converter manages the outputs when braking and turning occur together.

Those four circuits provide the ground and basic trailer lighting. There are no dedicated conductors for electric brakes, reverse lights, battery charging or auxiliary power.

Identify the connector before using the color chart

“Four-pin” describes the number of electrical positions, not their functions. Before applying the trailer color code, confirm that the connector belongs to a trailer-lighting system.

Check its:

  • Application: Tow vehicle, trailer, sensor, equipment or another system
  • Housing shape: Flat, round, rectangular or another form
  • Retention style: Friction fit, latch, locking tab or threaded coupling
  • Markings: Terminal letters, numbers, polarity symbols, brand or part number
  • Mounting method: Loose plug, panel-mounted socket or inline connector
  • Termination: Molded cable, crimp contacts, screw terminals or solder connections

Automotive sensors, Deutsch connectors, PC power plugs, JST-style connectors, hobby connectors and industrial sensor connectors can all have four positions. Depending on the family, those positions may carry power, ground, data or control signals. Matching pin counts do not make connectors electrically compatible.

Also distinguish a 4-way flat from a 4-way round trailer connector. They may carry the same four lighting functions, but their physical terminal locations should not be assumed to match.

Any terminal diagram must identify:

  • Whether it shows the trailer plug or tow-vehicle socket
  • Whether the view is from the mating face or wire-entry side
  • Which latch, keyway or exposed contact establishes orientation

A mating plug and socket appear mirrored when viewed face-on. If the physical terminal positions are uncertain, use documentation for the connector’s exact manufacturer and model. Do not relocate terminals from an unlabeled online image.

How to verify and connect the four circuits

Begin by inspecting the vehicle socket, trailer plug, cable and visible ground connections. Look for:

  • Bent, loose or pushed-back terminals
  • Corrosion, moisture or contamination
  • Cracked housings or damaged strain relief
  • Pinched, stretched or abraded cable
  • Loose ground fasteners
  • Paint or rust beneath a frame-ground connection
  • Splices or wire-color changes from earlier repairs

A color change at a splice is an immediate reason to trace or test the circuit rather than assuming the color remains consistent along the trailer.

Test the tow-vehicle connector before modifying the trailer. This establishes whether the vehicle is producing the required outputs and gives you known functions to connect.

  1. Secure the vehicle and switch off unnecessary loads.
  2. Use a circuit tester or multimeter suitable for the vehicle circuit.
  3. Identify the ground terminal from the connector or vehicle documentation.
  4. Turn on the parking or running lights and identify that output.
  5. Operate the left turn signal and identify the pulsing left output.
  6. Operate the right turn signal and identify the pulsing right output.
  7. Apply the brakes and verify both stop/turn outputs.
  8. Record each terminal’s function and the viewing orientation.

When vehicle or trailer colors are unknown, test one lighting function at a time and connect according to observed circuit function.

After identifying the outputs, connect ground to ground, running lights to running lights, and the verified left and right stop/turn circuits to their matching trailer circuits. Select terminals, splices and tools that match the actual connector and conductor rather than assuming one repair method suits every harness.

Complete every functional test before towing, preferably with another person observing the trailer lamps from behind. Testing the vehicle connector first and then checking the ground, plug, wiring and lamp assemblies provides a practical trailer-light diagnostic sequence.

Why some tow vehicles need a lighting converter

A conventional 4-way trailer harness expects combined stop-and-turn outputs: yellow serves the left brake and turn lamp, while green serves the right brake and turn lamp.

Some tow vehicles already provide combined outputs. Others have separate rear-light circuits, such as dedicated brake lamps and separate turn signals. A vehicle with separate brake and turn circuits generally requires an appropriate converter or vehicle-specific interface to produce the combined outputs expected by the trailer.

Do not choose a powered converter, unpowered converter or splice-in module solely by counting wires or matching colors. Check the tow vehicle manufacturer’s wiring information or the specification for a compatible vehicle-side harness. Use this decision process:

  • Combined left and right stop/turn outputs are already available: Connect through a compatible vehicle-side harness or socket.
  • Brake and turn outputs are separate: Use an appropriate converter or vehicle-specific interface.
  • The output arrangement is unknown: Test the connector and consult vehicle-specific wiring information before connecting the trailer.

Troubleshoot the circuit by symptom

Work in a fixed order: tow-vehicle output, ground, connector, trailer wiring, then lamp assemblies.

For all lights dead, confirm that the tow vehicle produces output before opening the trailer harness. Use the vehicle owner’s information to identify the applicable fuse rather than guessing from position or appearance. Ground, fuse, connector and damaged-wire checks are established starting points for 4-way trailer-light troubleshooting.

Dim, flickering or unpredictable operation calls for an early ground inspection. The white conductor should provide a deliberate electrical connection to the trailer frame or grounding system. Do not depend on incidental contact through the hitch ball as the sole return path; trailer-lighting instructions call for a frame connection, and the limitations of hitch-ball grounding are noted in 4-way installation guidance.

When one function fails, follow that circuit from source to load. For dead running lights, test the vehicle output, socket terminal, brown conductor, branches and lamp assemblies in that order. If the turn signals operate on opposite sides, inspect the yellow and green connections before replacing components.

When four pins are not enough

Reverse lights, electric brakes, battery charging and auxiliary power require conductors beyond the four used for basic lighting. A 5-way commonly adds a reverse-related circuit, while more complex combinations may require a suitable 6- or 7-way arrangement.

That is different from an active converter or vehicle-specific interface designed to process available vehicle signals.

The practical rule is straightforward: identify the connector first, match every wire by verified function rather than color alone, and test every lighting mode before towing. If the trailer needs brakes, reverse lights, charging or auxiliary power, use a connector with enough dedicated conductors for those functions.
