What Jeep Dealers Replace Under Fire Recall 21D
Check whether a 2021–2025 Wrangler or Gladiator may fall under recall 21D, what the dealer inspects, and which repair outcome may follow.

The dealer may service the wiring harness, replace the electric-hydraulic power-steering pump, or do both under Jeep recall 21D. The deciding factor is the dealer’s inspection of the high-resistance electrical connection; recall inclusion does not automatically entitle every affected Wrangler or Gladiator to a new pump and harness.
The campaign is identified as NHTSA recall 26V363000 and FCA/Mopar recall 21D. Inspection and necessary recall work are free. FCA says the affected population includes gasoline, diesel, and plug-in-hybrid vehicles, but the VIN record—not powertrain or model year alone—determines coverage. Mopar provides FCA’s official recall lookup and campaign information.
Choose the Jeep, build date, VIN status, symptoms, and inspection outcome to see the applicable next step.
This screens the published model-year and production ranges. Only the live VIN record can confirm whether campaign 21D applies.
| Model | Model years | Production window | U.S. vehicles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrangler | 2021–2025 | June 24, 2020–December 2, 2024 | 787,887 |
| Gladiator | 2021–2025 | August 18, 2020–December 2, 2024 | 289,112 |
| Total | 2021–2025 | Model-specific | 1,076,999 |
Matching these ranges does not prove VIN inclusion. A vehicle within the dates can still be outside the final recall population.

The Inspection Determines Whether Wiring, Pump, or Both Are Replaced
The reported defect area is an electrical connection in the wiring for the electric-hydraulic power-steering pump. Excessive resistance at that connection can create concentrated heat, melt connector material, damage components on either side of the connection, and potentially ignite nearby combustible material.
That distinction explains the variable remedy. The connection has a harness side and a pump-side electrical interface. Damage confined to the wiring side may call for harness work. Damage at the pump interface may require pump replacement. If heat has affected both sides, both may need service.
| Inspection Finding | Possible Dealer Action |
|---|---|
| Harness side requires service | Repair or replace wiring harness |
| Pump-side interface is affected | Replace power-steering pump |
| Damage affects both sides | Service harness and replace pump |
| Result not yet known | Follow the dealer inspection |
The public recall information does not disclose the detailed criteria technicians use to choose among harness repair, harness replacement, pump replacement, or work on both. An owner cannot reliably predict the result from mileage, engine type, symptoms, connector photographs, or another owner’s repair order.
The recall is not described as an ordinary mechanical pump failure. MotorTrend reported that an out-of-tolerance or loose connector header at the pump circuit-board interface may contribute to poor terminal contact. That is attributed reporting about the possible mechanism, not an owner diagnostic procedure. MotorTrend describes the connector-header issue and possible melting.
Owners should not unplug, probe, clean, splice, re-pin, or replace the recalled connection themselves. General information about terminal seating and contact pressure is available in Deutsch DT Connector Kit: Parts and Tool Choice, but that material is not FCA’s service procedure and does not identify the campaign repair.
Certain 2021–2025 Wranglers and Gladiators Are Included
Recall 21D covers certain model-year 2021–2025 Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator vehicles, not every vehicle carrying those model names and years.
The reported U.S. population is 1,076,999 vehicles: 787,887 Wranglers and 289,112 Gladiators. The suspect production periods reported for the two models are different. A Wrangler and Gladiator recall overview provides the model totals and production windows.
| Model | Suspect Production Window | U.S. Vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| Jeep Wrangler | June 24, 2020–December 2, 2024 | 787,887 |
| Jeep Gladiator | August 18, 2020–December 2, 2024 | 289,112 |
Production dates are not model years, sale dates, or registration dates. A model-year 2021 Jeep may have been assembled in 2020. A Jeep can also match the listed model year and production window while falling outside the final VIN population.
Powertrain is not decisive. FCA says the campaign population includes gasoline, diesel, and plug-in-hybrid vehicles, but this does not mean every vehicle using one of those powertrains is affected.
Use the 17-digit VIN to reach a final answer. It is commonly shown at the lower driver-side windshield, on the driver-door label, and on registration, title, and insurance documents. Enter it in the NHTSA recall search or Mopar lookup and look for 26V363000 or 21D.
The record should say whether the campaign is open or complete. If the VIN is rejected, the result is unclear, or the Jeep previously received steering-pump or harness work, contact an authorized Jeep dealer or FCA customer care at 1-800-853-1403. Previous work in the same area does not prove that the campaign inspection was performed or that 21D is closed.
Affected Jeeps Should Remain Outside Until Repaired
If recall 21D is open for the VIN, park the Jeep outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until the campaign is completed. The risk is reported to exist even when the ignition is off, so switching the vehicle off does not remove the basis for the warning.
In its June 9, 2026 alert, NHTSA said it was aware of 51 fires and one injury likely associated with the issue. NHTSA’s consumer alert gives the parking instruction and dated incident figures.
The precaution applies even when the Jeep appears normal. No warning message, odor, smoke, or steering problem does not establish that an affected vehicle is safe to park in a garage or beside a structure.
FCA says customers may continue driving while following the parking warning, so the campaign is not presented as a universal stop-driving order. That does not mean a symptomatic Jeep should automatically be driven to the dealership.
Possible warning signs include:
- A Service Power Steering message
- Reduced or lost power-steering assist
- A burning or hot-electrical odor
- Smoke
If one of these occurs, stop as soon as it is safe and contact an authorized Jeep dealer about safe transport. The available evidence does not establish a universal towing policy, reimbursement rule, or authorization process. Ask FCA or the servicing dealer whether that particular vehicle should be driven, towed, or handled another way.
If smoke or an active fire is present, move occupants away and contact emergency services as appropriate. Do not attempt a wiring repair at the scene.
A lawsuit involving a 2022 Gladiator alleged that a power-steering connector caused a fire while the vehicle was parked. Those allegations remain unproven and do not establish the cause of that individual fire. Carscoops reports the lawsuit and identifies the claims as allegations.
The Recall Process Ends Only When Campaign 21D Is Closed
After confirming that 21D is open, contact an authorized Jeep dealer and ask whether the remedy can currently be performed for the VIN. Continue following the outdoor-parking instruction while waiting.
The normal sequence is:
- Confirm that 26V363000 or 21D is open for the VIN.
- Park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles.
- Ask the dealer about appointment and remedy availability.
- Bring records for previous pump, steering, or harness work.
- Have the dealer inspect the harness-to-pump connection under FCA instructions.
- Complete the inspection-directed wiring, pump, or combined work.
- Retain the repair order and confirm that campaign 21D is closed.
Initial reporting expected owner letters to begin July 9, 2026, and FCA anticipated remedy availability by July 2026. Those targets do not prove that every dealer has immediate parts, technician capacity, or appointments. The reproduced FCA statement gives the original notification and remedy targets.
Booking an appointment, ordering a part, or receiving a preliminary inspection does not close the campaign. Continue following the parking warning until the dealer or live VIN record confirms completion.
The recall inspection and necessary campaign repair are free. Public information does not provide universal figures or promises for repair time, same-day completion, parts availability, towing reimbursement, loaner vehicles, or reimbursement for earlier repairs. No reliable standard duration has been published in the supplied evidence.
Recall 21D Is Not a Fuel-Pump or 4xe Battery Recall
Campaign 26V363000/21D involves the electrical connection at the electric-hydraulic power-steering pump. That pump supplies steering assist; it is not the engine’s high-pressure fuel pump.
Certain 2021–2023 EcoDiesel Gladiators have a separate high-pressure fuel-pump issue. This Gladiator overview distinguishes the steering electrical connection from the EcoDiesel fuel-pump campaign.
Recall 21D is also separate from high-voltage battery recalls involving Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe vehicles. A Wrangler 4xe may be included in the steering campaign, but completing battery-recall work does not complete 21D.
| Recall Topic | Affected System | Identifier |
|---|---|---|
| Steering electrical fire recall | Wiring connection at steering pump | 26V363000 / 21D |
| EcoDiesel fuel-pump recall | Engine fuel-delivery system | Separate VIN campaign |
| 4xe battery recall | High-voltage propulsion battery | Specific battery campaign |
One vehicle can have multiple open campaigns. Each campaign shown for the VIN must be reviewed and closed separately.
Incident Counts Describe Different Sets of Reports
The public incident figures should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.
NHTSA’s June 9 alert reported 51 fires and one injury likely associated with the issue. FCA separately reported 72 potentially related incidents. “Potentially related incidents” does not mean 72 confirmed fires.
Another account reported 35 field reports confirmed as originating at the pump interface, within a broader set of reports reviewed as of May 18, 2026. The recall summary distinguishes potentially related incidents from reports confirmed at the pump interface.
The numbers use different definitions, scopes, and cutoff dates. None changes the owner instruction: verify the VIN, follow the outdoor-parking warning if 21D is open, and have the dealer complete the inspection-directed repair.
Common Claims That the Recall Does Not Support
Every recalled Jeep gets a new pump and harness. No. The remedy is inspection-based. The dealer may service the wiring, replace the pump, or work on both.
Every 2021–2025 Wrangler and Gladiator is recalled. No. Those years describe the potential population; the VIN lookup determines inclusion.
The pump has a universal internal mechanical defect. The initiating concern is described as high resistance at an electrical connection. Pump replacement may be needed when the pump-side interface is affected, but the recall does not establish that every pump has an internal mechanical failure.
The official fix is always an intermediate connector harness. Public commentary has discussed that possibility, but the supplied evidence does not establish it as the universal remedy. Current FCA dealer instructions control the repair.
Previous work means the recall is complete. Not necessarily. Even if a pump or harness was previously serviced, the dealer or live VIN record must confirm that the campaign requirements were completed and 21D is closed.
